After experiencing significant personal loss, a former DC General Counsel attorney sought an uplifting, glamorous makeover for her home. She wanted to transition from a traditional aesthetic to a cleaner, bolder look infused with feminine touches that pay homage to Old Hollywood's golden days. Inspired by a pair of cobalt blue chairs showcased in a design by Lorna at a designer showhouse in Potomac, Maryland, she enlisted Lorna to reimagine her home's design around these vibrant fabrics. The challenge was to create a cohesive, elegant space that balanced fun and sophistication.
To achieve this vision, Lorna introduced furnishings and fixtures with metallic and acrylic detailing, adding a touch of glamour inspired by the Hollywood Regency style. She carried the rich cobalt blue hue from the anchor chairs throughout the main floor, unifying the spaces. Pops of fuchsia and jewelry-like cabinet hardware were incorporated to add the feminine detailing the client desired. A major structural change involved opening the kitchen wall, enhancing flow for entertaining and providing an unobstructed view of the Potomac River. This modification not only improved functionality but also allowed natural light to flood the room, making it feel more open and inviting.
A significant hurdle arose when the crucial cobalt blue fabric for the anchor chairs was discontinued. After unsuccessful attempts to find a suitable alternative, Lorna reached out to the fabric mill, which agreed to produce one last batch, ensuring that the chairs remained the focal point of the design and preserving the integrity of the original vision.
Throughout the home, colorful and effervescent artwork was selected to infuse joy and liveliness into the spaces. The oak floors, originally stained a warm blonde hue, were re-stained in sophisticated charcoal gray, providing a modern contrast to the vibrant furnishings. Key pieces in the living room included a Henredon sofa, a Greek Key acrylic cocktail table, and vintage cerulean blue lamps from the 1960s. The morning room featured custom hand-knotted rugs with metallic starbursts and mirrored cabinetry, enhancing the luxurious feel.
In the kitchen, cobalt blue accents continued with a striking cobalt stove, complemented by quartzite countertops, glass-front cabinetry, and gold fixtures. The space was further enhanced with a gold sink and animal print chairs, creating a chic, playful atmosphere. The result is a home that beautifully blends bold colors, glamorous details, and personal touches, offering the client a refreshed and joyful living space.
